Which system for which load
- Ratchet straps — the everyday solution for palletised and general cargo. Reusable, quick to apply, from 2T end-fitting straps for vans up to 5T ergo ratchets with STF 500 daN for heavy transport.
- One-way lashing — 50 mm composite band cut to length with buckles and hooks, rated 5,000 kg breaking strength. For export and sea freight where the securing material does not come back. No return logistics, no strap management.
- Grade 80 chains — for machinery, steel and construction equipment on flatbeds and low-loaders, where textile is not enough. Certified to EN 12195-3 with the labelling roadside inspection requires.
Understanding STF and LC
Two figures govern strap selection. LC (lashing capacity) is the force the strap can take in a straight pull — the 2T, 4T or 5T rating. STF (standard tension force) is the pre-tension the ratchet actually puts into the strap, and for top-over lashing that is the number that decides how many straps you need.
A high-LC strap with a weak ratchet delivers little restraint in top-over lashing. That is why STF 500 daN ergo ratchets do more for a heavy load than simply moving up a lashing capacity class.
How to cut the number of straps you need
Under EN 12195-1 the required restraint is calculated from the friction between cargo and load bed. Raising that friction with anti-slip material from around 0.2-0.3 µ to 0.6 µ and above can reduce the number of straps needed by up to 40%. Adding edge protection preserves the tension around corners so the force you apply actually reaches the far side of the load.
Straps, anti-slip and edge protection are one system. Buying them from one supplier per pallet is what takes the real cost per trip down.
Inspection and withdrawal
- Withdraw any strap with cuts, chafing, cut edges, deformed hooks or a damaged ratchet.
- The label must remain legible — an unlabelled strap fails inspection regardless of condition.
- Never knot a strap; a knot substantially reduces its capacity.
- Protect every corner the strap crosses to prevent the damage that causes withdrawal in the first place.
