Why edge protection is not optional

A tensioned lashing strap exerts its full force where it bends over a corner. Three things happen at once: the strap cuts into the cargo, the corner cuts into the strap, and friction at the bend absorbs part of the tension so it never reaches the far side of the load.

That last point is the one most operations underestimate. Without an edge protector, part of the pre-tension applied at the ratchet is lost around the corner, meaning the far side of your load is secured with less force than the tension indicator suggests. Edge protectors let the strap slide over the corner and distribute tension evenly across the whole load.

The inspection angle

A strap with cuts, chafing or cut edges must be withdrawn from service under EN 12195-2. A single unprotected corner on a single trip can damage a strap beyond further use. Roadside inspection will flag it, and a load secured with a damaged strap is a load that fails.

Choosing the right type

Pallet edge protectors (60 cm and 120 cm) — span the full width of a pallet edge, spreading strap force across the whole top edge rather than concentrating it at one point. The choice for palletised and boxed goods.
Strap edge protectors (8 mm) — slide onto the strap itself and travel with it. For straps up to 60 mm. Ideal where corner positions vary from load to load, such as machinery and mixed cargo.
Reusable PE — both types survive many trips, so cost per use falls with every load.

Correct use in practice

Fit a protector at every corner the strap crosses, not just the top ones — the bottom edges of a pallet cut just as effectively.
Position the protector so the strap runs centrally over it and cannot slip off during tensioning.
Check protectors for cracks and deformation; a split protector no longer distributes force.
Combine with anti-slip mats and correct lashing angles for a compliant setup under EN 12195-1.

Frequently asked

How many do I need per load? One per corner crossed by a strap. A standard four-strap pallet load typically needs eight protectors, though this varies with lashing pattern.

Do they work on soft cargo? Yes — on cartons, bagged goods and insulation the protector prevents the strap cutting into the packaging, which is often the main damage source rather than strap wear.
