Blocking instead of tying down
Cargo bars and cargo planks secure by form-locking: they clamp between the vehicle walls and physically block the load from moving, without needing lashing points, straps or ratchets. For part-loads, multi-drop routes and vans without proper anchorage, that is faster and often more effective than tying down.
The critical safety case is the door end. When a load shifts forward during braking and the driver opens the doors, unsecured cargo falls out. A bar or plank across the rear face prevents that — which is why multi-drop operations fit one as standard on every load.
Bar or plank?
- Cargo bars — light aluminium, quick to clamp, ideal for holding lighter goods in place and creating quick sections in a van.
- Cargo planks — around 400 daN blocking force, considerably more restraint than a standard bar. The choice for heavier part-loads and where an intermediate wall is needed to divide the load space.
- Telescopic tools — allow placement and release at height from ground level, removing the need to climb into the load space.
Correct use in practice
- Clamp against solid vehicle walls, not against trim panels or thin lining that can deform under pressure.
- Position at the height of the load mass, not above or below it, so the blocking force acts where the cargo will push.
- Check the clamping mechanism regularly — a bar that has lost tension gives a false sense of security.
- Combine with anti-slip material underneath so the load resists sliding as well as being blocked.
Frequently asked
How many per load? One at the door end as a minimum. For multi-drop, one per section so each delivery stays separated and blocked.
Do they damage the vehicle? Correctly positioned against structural walls, no. Damage occurs when a bar is clamped against panelling that was never intended to take load.
